As we get ready for another school year, there is so much information that needs to be shared and parents need to keep in mind as they figure out schedules and school supplies and bus schedules etc.

We will print bus schedules and homeroom lists in the Penny Saver; school supply lists are available on the website. Our website has a new look to it! Our “web-master” has cleaned up the design and layout and updated much of the information for us. There are still some pieces that are out of date and in this world of “instant information” seem absolutely ancient! But we’re getting them corrected.

Knowing the best ways to support your child is one of the most difficult aspects of being a parent. All of us have been told by our children that “this kid was mean”, or “that teacher was rude”, or a particular coach doesn’t like them. As a parent, my concern was always for the well-being and success of my children! But sometimes that meant telling them to “deal with it!” Let me use sports as an example since the fall seasons have begun practice already. But these scenarios apply to other situations as well.

We all have visions of our child being the “star” of the team – making every play, saving every game, and leading the Tomahawks to win after win. So what do we do when our child plays only a few minutes, or maybe not at all?

We teach them the value of being part of a team! This is promoted by all of the coaches and the even the Corinth Booster Club promotes the value of participation by recognizing players who play more than one sport.

We teach our children that every person on the team has a role. The person who is not playing needs to push the players who are on the field to be better. We teach our children to approach the coach and ask how to improve so that he or she does play more. It is tempting as a parent to approach the coach ourselves and ask these questions, but then we have missed a chance to teach our child to advocate for him or herself. We want to make the lives of our children easier. Yet there are some things they need to learn how to do so that they will be successful in other situations.

So parents, think of what is best for your child before calling a coach or a teacher. Talk to your son or daughter and give them advice how to approach that adult and ask the questions. You will do a far better thing for your child than if you ask as a parent.

DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS GOLF TOURNAMENT

Dollar for Scholars Annual Golf Tournament will be held on September 18 at Brookhaven Golf Course. Shotgun Start will be at 9am. Pre-registration fee is $70 and you may do so by calling 654-6341, otherwise the cost is $75.00. Please plan to attend this worthwhile event which each year benefits Corinth students to receive scholarships.

MINI-COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Last year, we piloted our very own enrichment mini courses. From September to December, courses were offered for students in grades 2-4. In the spring, we offered courses to students in grades 5-7. We are grateful to the community members and Corinth faculty that offered a course last year!

This year, we are planning to expand our offerings. We would like to offer (2) sessions of courses for both the elementary and middle school. The first session for both buildings would be in the Fall/Winter. The second session for both buildings would be in Winter/Spring. Each course will consist of 6 classes each -- one course per week over a period of 6 weeks.

We will need MANY instructors to be able to expand our offerings. We are now accepting proposals from potential mini course teachers. Courses will need to be hands-on and exciting. Courses should provide students with deeper and different exposure to content that they might not normally receive in school.

We want course instructors that have a passion for their topic! Experience with children is a must. Prior or current teaching experience is preferred, but certification is not required. Multidisciplinary ideas are encouraged! Instructor pay will be per session. Corinth CSD will provide small budget for supplies and materials for each course.

If you are interested in teaching a course, please complete the proposal form and compile a packet (see Mini Course Proposal for more info ) .

Please send all the requested materials to: Lisa Meade, Director of Student Services. Proposals will be accepted until September 14, 2010. For additional information about mini courses or to have an application mailed to you, please call 654-9005 X 3432.
