Budget Update We live in uncertain economic times in NYS and in our nation. We see rising costs and unemployment around us and we don’t know how this will play out. People are afraid of the unknown and that translates into their emotions and attitudes towards all aspects of daily life. Education is under attack from the press as it never has been. We are “in the crosshairs” of the media and the Governor. This paints the picture that education is a wasteful business. Nothing could be further from the truth! We have maintained level of accountability to our taxpayers like no other public entity. The Corinth community sees every day the product of our efforts: • the recent award from US News & World Report; • the high graduation rates; • the GED program to help students who have dropped out; • the concerts and plays that enrich the lives of our community as well as our students; • our students attending 2 and 4 year colleges and being successful; • Our teachers and administrators and support staff helping students whenever and wherever they are needed. The Governor says school district hoard money. Yes, Corinth has reserves. They offer a safeguard against unexpected large expenses and they are used as necessary for that reason. Just last summer we pulled $375,000 from our reserves to make up the difference in the property tax calculation. We vote on our budgets in May. In August we get the actual numbers from NYS. My only other options were to cut that from the budget – eliminate jobs – or to raise taxes. Neither was acceptable. Also, we used over $900,000 last year to keep the tax rate as low as it is for this year. So when the leadership in Albany tells people that school plan poorly, think about this and realize that your school district is in the good condition it is because we have a Board of Education and Administration that plan well and think to the future! Ski Club There has been quite a bit of conversation lately about the Ski Club. This is a joint venture between the School District and the Town of Corinth. Several times it has been referred to as a sport. It isn’t, but rather an activity. The Town pays for the chaperones and takes care of everything at West Mountain. The School District provides the bus to and from the mountain. Last year, the Board introduced a $2.00 fee for students when we sent a club on an activity. For example, when the Jr. Class goes to Glens Falls for a lock-in, they had to pay this per student fee. The same applies to Ski Club. Please understand that this is in no way intended to cover the cost of the transportation, and in fact, doesn’t even come close. Rather it is a token and awareness that it does cost the taxpayers money when these decisions are made.
